Public confidence in judiciary restored, says CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday that public confidence in the courts had been “restored” and that every judicial decision enjoyed public support.

While addressing various delegations of lawyers, he said no one would be able to violate court verdicts due to the public confidence and trust in courts. Superior court decisions were public property, the 160 million people of Pakistan were the custodians of courts, and they would ensure that the decisions were implemented in their true spirit, he said.

About the shortage of judges, he said all appointments in the higher judiciary should be on merit, adding that there was no delay on the part of the Supreme Court (SC). He assured the lawyers that he would take up the matter with the government to appoint judges as soon as possible.

Referring to a case in the SC about the appointment of judges in the Sindh High Court, he said the case had been settled and judges would soon be appointed.

About SC suo motu actions on public interest cases, he said high courts and district and session courts would be involved to provide relief to the common man.

The CJP said the people had shown “trust and faith in the lawyers’ movement” and that people from far-flung areas participated in it. Lawyers should fulfil their responsibility by upholding the trust posed in them by the people, he said. Regarding the speed of case disposals, he said it was an important issue affecting the common man and that the SC needed to look into the matter.

“Bar and bench are like a family and they should provide relief to litigants,” he said.

Earlier, the presidents of the Free Legal Aid Committee, the Pakistan Bar Council, the Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar, the LHC Multan Bench Bar and the LCH Bahawalpur Bench Bar showed their confidence in the CJP.

They appreciated the role of civil society in the lawyer’s movement, and assured the CJP that they would support him in providing justice to the poor.

Free Legal Aid Committee President Ramzan Chaudhry said the committee was providing legal services to people who could not hire lawyers, adding that the committee had visited various jails in this regard. online
